Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka (b.1988) brings together historical craft technologies of her heritage, including hand-papermaking, natural dye, linocut, gyotaku (printing real fish), and washi (Japanese paper). Hatanaka engages with endangered processes that both require and contribute to a balanced ecosystem. Her work, taking the form of sewn paper sculpture, large-scale print installation, collaborative performances and wearable washi, addresses contemporary questions of climate change and mental health, informed by a decade of community-engaged projects in Nunavut and lived experience with bipolar disorder. Hatanaka’s recurring motifs of landscapes, fish, and water speak to personal and collective experiences of struggle, resilience, and survival. 

 

Hatanaka is participating in the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia by Koyo Kouoh. Her work has been exhibited at Walk&Talk Biennial (Azores, PT), Kotaro Nukaga (Tokyo, JP), Harper’s Gallery (New York, USA), Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto, CA), Toronto Biennial of Art (Toronto, CA), Ino Cho Paper Museum (Kochi, Japan), Solo Booth at the Armory show (New York City, US), Kristin Hjellegjerde (Berlin, DE) andCanadian Embassy to Japan’s Prince Takamado Gallery (Tokyo, JP). 

 

Recent acquisitions include the National Gallery Singapore (Singapore, SG), The British Museum (London, UK), Dallas Art Museum (Dallas, USA), Material Art and Design Museum (New York City, USA), Shiga Prefecture Museum (Otsu, JP), National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa, CA) and Wellin Museum (Clinton, USA). Hatanaka is a 2025 artist in residence at Black Rock Senegal.

Liliana Coutinho (Lisbon, 1977) is a Debates and Conferences programmer at Culturgest — Caixa Geral de Depósitos Foundation and an Integrated Researcher at IHC — NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST. She was co-curator of Walk&Talk - Bienal de Artes, September — November 2025, in São Miguel (Azores, Portugal).

 

She was part of the curatorial team for the INDEX / Braga Media Arts Biennials of Art and Technology, in 2022 and 2024. She was assistant director and curator of thematic cycles at Teatro Maria Matos between 2015 and 2017. Between 2013 and 2015, she was responsible for the Education Service at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art.As a researcher and curator, she has collaborated with CAM - Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, M.A.C. Serralves, Le Plateau (Paris), Artistas Unidos and Atelier Re.Al.She was part of the editorial team for Close-Up, Orfeu Negro, 2022, by Ana Borralho & João Galante.

She co-edited the book Paisagens Imprevistas (2020), dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Materiais Diversos Festival.
